A strong author bio is a vital piece of your professional toolkit. While it might feel like a minor detail, your author bio does a lot of heavy lifting! It 1) establishes your authority, 2) sets reader expectations for your work, and 3) provides a personal touch to help you connect with your audience. A bio filled with relevant keywords and tropes will also help with SEO on your site, socials, and anywhere you post it.
One pitfall I see with a lot of author bios is that they are far too long. As a general rule of thumb, you should aim for a length of approximately 100 words. That doesn’t seem like a lot, but it’s important to keep it succinct. Think of it as an elevator pitch for your author brand. I’ve encouraged coaching clients to write an extended author bio on their site and put that link at the bottom of your author bio.

The most important part of your bio is to clearly state your genre and the primary tropes you write. For instance, stating that you write “small town romance with alpha heroes and steamy happy-ever-afters” tells the reader exactly what they are getting. This helps filter your audience so that you attract the readers who will most enjoy your specific style.
You can also include relevant experience, awards, or education to build trust. If you have a background in creative writing, journalism, or even professional experience that mirrors your characters’ lives (like being a former nurse writing medical romance), mentioning it can add a layer of credibility to your work.

Personal details are equally important for building a relationship with your readers, but you have to pick the right details to highlight. Mentioning hobbies like reading, crocheting, or even “chasing around grumpy cats” makes you relatable. These small “fun facts” give readers an insight into other areas of your life without dumping your life story and publishing journey in a long bio that most readers won’t read all the way through.
Finally, every bio must include a call to action. Always provide a way for readers to find your website (where your extended author bio lives for those who want to know more) or your newsletter sign-up page. This ensures that once a reader is interested in you as an author, they have an immediate path to becoming a subscriber and hearing more about your books.

Unfortunately, Amazon doesn’t allow direct links that lead people away from their site, so you have to get creative. Usually, I’ll put a space instead of a dot for my website (www cameronhart net) so it’s not a link, but if people copy/paste into their browser, it will still bring up my site as the first suggestion. I will write a separate post about SEO on your site to get a higher ranking in Google search! But back to the main topic…
Consistency is key across all platforms. Once you have crafted your bio, keep it uniform across your social media profiles and your Amazon author page. While you can expand on your “about me” page on your own website, having a consistent short version elsewhere reinforces your professional brand.

Here’s my author bio that comes in at around 70 words:
Cameron Hart is a USA Today Bestselling author with over one hundred books available. She writes romance novellas featuring curvy heroines, protective alphas, lots of heat, and plenty of sweet.
Cameron graduated from the Iowa Writers’ workshop in 2012 with a double degree in Journalism & Creative Writing. When she’s not working on her next book, she can be found reading, crocheting, doing yoga, and chasing around her grumpy cats.

To recap: Author bios are important for establishing your brand/authority, meeting reader expectations, and connecting with your audience. Stick to relevant facts, load up on keywords, and provide a way for readers to find more about you.
I would love to talk to you about your author bio & all the things that come with being an indie author!
